| | Our toolsSuperpower ChatGPT/WFH.team/Snipman | Today's briefing What matters todayToday, conversation privacy gets two different treatments: ChatGPT is rolling out locks, while Meta has disabled sharing after researchers found sensitive chats. Beyond chat, AI is beating a championship crossword time, joining a live symphony and producing toxin-binding proteins that have not been shown to neutralize toxins. | Inside today's briefing | | 01 | ChatGPT’s new locks hide selected conversations from history and search, but leave retention and model-improvement settings unchanged. | | 02 | Darmok finished the Times cryptic final about three minutes ahead of the human winner after changes to its models and solving process. | | 03 | Eric Schmidt reportedly owns about 1% of Anthropic, but a $20 billion stake value depends on a valuation not yet established. | | 04 | Claude-generated proteins bound four scorpion toxins in lab tests, but the experiments did not test protection in cells or animals. |
| | Lead story / launch OpenAI adds PIN locks to ChatGPT without changing data settingsOpenAI began gradually rolling out Locked Chats on October 20, giving ChatGPT users a way to protect selected conversations with a four-digit PIN or supported device authentication, including Face ID and Touch ID. The feature is designed for shared-device situations: keeping a personal exchange or surprise out of ordinary browsing without deleting the conversation. To use it, open a conversation’s three-dot menu and select Lock chat. The conversation moves into a dedicated section and disappears from regular history, pinned chats and search results. With Memory enabled, new messages can update a separate memory shared within Locked Chats, not regular Memory. Information remembered before locking, however, is not removed from regular Memory. This is an access lock, not end-to-end encryption or a separate encrypted vault. Retention and the “Improve the model for everyone” setting stay unchanged, so locking a conversation does not change whether it may be used for model improvement. There is also a consequential reset rule: resetting the PIN permanently deletes all chats, files and other content protected by the old PIN. The release note names Free, Go, Plus and Pro users on the web and on iOS, Android, macOS and Windows. TechCrunch reports that Business, Enterprise and Edu will also have access, but rollout is gradual and availability is not guaranteed immediately. ChatGPT for Healthcare is excluded, as are Temporary, archived, group and shared-link chats, plus conversations containing scheduled tasks or meeting recordings. Read full story ↗ |

 | benchmark AI solver finishes Times cryptic final faster than the human winnerDarmok finished the Times championship cryptic final about three minutes faster than winner Liam Hughes, the Guardian reports. Sid Chatterjee upgraded its models and made it attempt every clue before entering answers; its previous attempt ended after 18 minutes without a solution. It resolved visual wordplay that tripped up three of five finalists. Performance still varies by puzzle setter, and Chatterjee sees writing cryptics as a harder challenge. Continue reading ↗ |

| | culture Boston Symphony will premiere a work that pairs musicians with live AIThe Boston Symphony Orchestra will premiere Tod Machover’s “already and not yet” on October 22 at Symphony Hall. A system built at MIT Media Lab is intended to highlight individual players, then connect their performances as the work progresses. Studio-made electronics and live human sound mixing remain part of the setup. Machover cautions that current AI can detect audio patterns better than it can interpret expressive intent. | | business Eric Schmidt reportedly owns about 1% of Anthropic ahead of a possible IPOEric Schmidt owns about 1% of Anthropic, Bloomberg reports, after investing tens of millions of dollars in its 2021 Series A. That stake would be worth $15 billion to $20 billion at valuations investors have discussed—not a realized payout. It remains unclear whether he has sold any shares. A listing before year-end is widely expected, according to TechCrunch, but no timetable is confirmed. Continue reading ↗ |

Stop Making Shoppers Spell It Out
“Running shos” shouldn’t return zero results. Neither should “red waterprof trail runners under $150.”
Traditional search needs exact keywords. Gladly understands what shoppers mean, typos and all, and turns dead-end searches into products that fit what they asked for.
