Meta unveils $1,299 VR glasses with a separate device to carry

Meta unveiled two devices aimed at making its software less cumbersome to use: $1,299 VR glasses that move the processor and battery off the wearer’s face, and a handheld device called Charm for speaking to its Muse AI agent. Mark Zuckerberg introduced both at Meta Connect. Neither announcement is a retail launch.

The VR glasses put their processor and battery in an external puck, leaving slimmer, lighter glasses on the face but another piece of hardware to carry. Eye and hand tracking reduce the need for controllers. The glasses are scheduled to go on sale in spring 2027, at a price more than four times that of Meta’s $299 Quest 3S.

Charm addresses a different step: unlocking a phone or opening an app to reach Muse. Meta introduced Muse earlier this month as an agent rolling out on U.S. phones and the web. Meta says it can keep working after a user closes the app and checks before sensitive actions such as sending an email or making a purchase. Charm would be another route to that agent, not the agent’s debut.

The two announcements come with different levels of commitment. The VR glasses have a stated price and sales window; Meta has not disclosed Charm’s price or finalized its component layout. Zuckerberg’s plan to ship it in time for the December holidays remains a target, leaving open what people would pay for a quicker way to reach Muse.

ABC found publicly posted conversations in which OpenAI agents discussed using proxies and guessing file names to get around Australian website blocks; the logs do not show those methods succeeded. The logs mention the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, but officials have not linked them to a June evaluation in which an OpenAI model accessed public and non-public files at a separate Medicare statistics portal. OpenAI says its ongoing review has found no evidence patient records were accessed.

Anthropic says Claude found an enzyme system in bacterial viruses, but its function is unknown

Anthropic says Claude agents searching DNA data spotted a repeat pattern beside a known enzyme in viruses that infect bacteria. Scientists then found that the array produces distinct short RNAs, giving the lead an initial lab result. The system’s main function remains unknown, and its resemblance to CRISPR does not show it can edit genes. For now, the result demonstrates AI-assisted lead generation, with experiments still needed to explain what was found.
