OpenAI Halts New $200 Pro Sign-Ups as Astra Demand Strains Capacity

Lead story / platform shift

OpenAI pauses new $200 Pro sign-ups over Astra demand

OpenAI has temporarily stopped new sign-ups and upgrades to its $200-a-month ChatGPT Pro plan after demand for GPT-6 Astra put pressure on its infrastructure. Existing $200 Pro subscribers keep their access, but the company has provided no timetable for reopening the tier.

The company describes the move as targeted capacity control rather than a withdrawal of Astra. OpenAI product leader Thibault Sottiaux said the $200 plan creates the greatest strain on its systems, making it the narrowest point at which to limit incoming demand while preserving broader access.

New and existing $100 Pro subscriptions are unaffected, as are Go, Plus, and API access. But current $200 Pro customers who cancel or let their plan expire cannot buy it again until OpenAI lifts the pause.

The decision makes the tradeoff unusually visible: OpenAI is giving up potential premium subscriptions to protect service quality for users already on the plan. What remains unclear is the scale of attempted sign-ups and how long the capacity constraint will last.

Anthropic Says It Removed Claude Accounts Tied to Nine Influence Operations

Anthropic removes Claude accounts tied to nine influence operations

Anthropic says it removed accounts linked to nine influence operations across six continents. The campaigns reportedly used Claude for fake personas, news sites, forged documents, political content, and repeatable distribution workflows—not simply individual posts. Anthropic says it can spot some activity before publication, but its direct view ends largely once material enters wider media networks.

University of Georgia Study Finds AI Interview Scoring Encouraged Exaggeration

AI interview scoring led candidates to exaggerate, study finds

A University of Georgia-led study of hundreds of asynchronous job applicants found that candidates were more likely to embellish qualifications when they believed AI would score their recorded interviews. The tested AI rated embellished and honest candidates with equivalent qualifications about as highly, while human reviewers generally favored more authentic answers. Telling candidates the AI’s evaluation criteria reduced exaggeration to levels comparable with expected human review.

NASA and IBM release open AI tools for mapping the Moon

NASA and IBM released an open-source lunar AI model, code, datasets, and benchmarks for work including crater mapping, volcanic-feature detection, and polar-ice analysis. The model was trained on roughly 2 million image tiles drawn from multiple missions and can be adapted with less labeled data for narrower tasks. NASA and IBM report especially strong ice-stability results, though changing orbital lighting can make smaller craters harder to detect.

DNSMOS gives you a score, not whether that data fits your model. Treat it as pass/fail and you'll train on audio that looks clean but hurts performance, while tossing good data for no reason.
