AI labs reportedly prepare for a possible crisis and public backlash

Executives at OpenAI, Anthropic, and other major AI companies are preparing contingency plans for a possible AI catastrophe and the public backlash that could follow, Axios reported October 9. OpenAI confirmed that it runs preparedness exercises across a range of scenarios and stressed that none is treated as inevitable. Anthropic declined to comment.

The scenarios include hypothetical hacks targeting the power grid, water supply, or banking system. These are planning exercises, not newly disclosed attacks on those services. According to the reporting, executives are considering how to respond to public anger and possible sweeping government regulation, alongside the harm an attack could cause.

Several industry insiders believe a major incident could occur within six to 12 months, according to the Times of India’s account of Axios’s reporting. That is an insider forecast—not an established deadline or a prediction publicly endorsed by both companies. The account offers no evidence of an imminent threat.

How unusual the preparations are remains unclear. The New York Post noted that they may resemble tabletop exercises, the scenario-based rehearsals long used by banks and the Pentagon. OpenAI also said AI is changing the cyber threat landscape and that it is focused on putting capable tools in defenders’ hands.

U.S. software job postings rise nearly 15%, but senior roles drive the rebound

Senior roles drive most of the rebound in U.S. software job postings

U.S. software-development postings rose nearly 15% since late February 2025, but remain 27.5% below pre-pandemic levels, according to Indeed data reported by CNBC. In a separate May 2025–May 2026 breakdown, senior roles drove 71% of the increase. Stanford’s AI Index found employment among developers ages 22–25 fell 20%, underscoring the weaker entry-level path. The posting rebound does not establish that AI created the openings.

Veria says its AI uncovered an XRP flaw that could create 18 trillion tokens

Veria says its AI agent combined two calculation flaws in XRP Ledger software and built a local exploit capable of creating 18 trillion XRP in one transaction. According to Veria, RippleX found no evidence of exploitation. Developers released an emergency fix in September, bypassing the usual validator vote. Ready-to-run software went out before source code, temporarily limiting outside inspection while unpatched systems were being protected.

Anthropic Pauses Startup Offers, Putting Some Approved Benefits Back Under Review

Anthropic pauses startup offers, putting unclaimed approvals under review

Anthropic paused the free Claude Team year and $1,000 in API credits after applications exceeded the program’s capacity. It is re-reviewing applications, including approved accounts with unclaimed offers, and some will lose access. Already redeemed offers remain intact. Existing members retain partner discounts, office hours, and events; the pause does not close the broader startup program.
