Cambridge Mathematician Says OpenAI’s Astra Solved a Group-Theory Problem

Henry Bradford, a fellow of mathematics at the University of Cambridge, says OpenAI’s Astra solved the existence problem for non-sofic groups earlier this month. The claim puts a result from group theory at the center of a broader argument about what AI-generated mathematics would mean for the field.

Bradford’s reading of the proof is deliberately narrow. He characterizes it as largely a slight twist on theorems by Gabor Kun and Andreas Thom, rather than an entirely new body of theory. Still, he says an AI capable of this kind of recombination would have seemed incredible only months ago.

For Bradford, the distinction is not whether a theorem counts as progress. Drawing on mathematician William Thurston’s writing, he argues that mathematics also lives in people learning, sharing, and extending ideas—not just in a collection of answers.

His immediate concern is institutional. If universities come to treat high-volume paper output as the main measure of value, he argues, cash-strapped administrators may see human mathematicians as superfluous. He does not call that outcome inevitable; he frames it as a choice about what society values in human intellect.
