Today's briefing

What matters today

The day’s defining tension is no longer just how quickly AI can advance, but what conditions should govern the next step. OpenAI and Anthropic are pairing big commercial moves with public arguments for restraint, while product and research teams confront more immediate safety and privacy choices.

Inside today's briefing
01Sam Altman backed a possible cross-lab slowdown, but disclosed no shared terms, timeline, or completed agreement.
02Anthropic is reportedly targeting an October Nasdaq IPO at a valuation of up to $2 trillion, with key offering terms still open.
03Meta removed prompts about children and home locations, while saying Meta AI can still use information users can access.
04MIT researchers report a way to keep AI outputs within hard constraints without retraining the underlying model.

Sam Altman Backs AI Slowdown, Says Labs May Reach a Deal

Lead story / culture

Sam Altman backs slowing frontier AI development

Sam Altman has publicly backed Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei’s call to slow frontier AI development, and said he thinks leading labs may reach an agreement to do so. But Altman offered no timetable, standard, participating companies, or completed pact. The immediate development is an endorsement of restraint, not evidence that competitors have adopted shared limits.

Altman tied his position to OpenAI’s own internal threshold. He said the company’s most advanced unreleased models need more progress on monitorability, alignment, and understanding model behavior before their capabilities are pushed much further. In practical terms, he is pointing to the need to understand what a model is doing and whether it follows human values and users’ intent.

Amodei’s proposal goes beyond a slower pace. He has called for frontier labs to embed third-party evaluators who could assess safety practices, report incidents, and examine models, training pipelines, and processes. Anthropic has said it will take that evaluator step unilaterally, creating a concrete test of whether the safety discussion changes operations inside a lab.

The key uncertainty is whether Altman’s public alignment becomes an arrangement other labs can accept. Private discussions, pauses at new capability levels, and outside review have all been raised, but none was presented as a detailed cross-lab commitment. For operators and investors, the distinction matters: a shared warning does not yet establish a shared operating rule.

Anthropic reportedly targets an October Nasdaq IPO at up to $2 trillion

Anthropic confidentially submitted a draft S-1 on June 1 and is reportedly targeting a Nasdaq listing in October. The company has not announced a share count or offering price, and said any deal depends on SEC review, market conditions, and other factors. CNBC reported $65 billion in annualized revenue in July, alongside multibillion-dollar compute agreements.

OpenAI says it will not pursue an IPO in 2026

Altman said an IPO this year would be ill-advised, tying a future listing to business readiness, safety and alignment work, and society’s ability to handle more capable AI. He did not commit to a 2027 date. OpenAI has discussed pauses at new capability levels, but announced no development freeze or measurable readiness standard.

Arm CEO says AI could help cure cancer in his lifetime

Rene Haas said increasingly capable AI and computing could eventually help solve cancer, while acknowledging that current systems cannot model how cancer affects a DNA marker. The nearer-term evidence is narrower: the NHS said AI-powered X-ray tools helped more than 4 million patients receive faster lung diagnoses earlier this year. Haas also said chip shortages are constraining humanoid-robot deployment.

Screenshot of a Reddit post in r/ChatGPT titled “It actually did it.” with a News tag. It shows a large wine glass filled with dark red wine on a marble countertop. The caption reads: “I didn’t think it could, I’ve always seen things that said chatgpt or any ai couldn’t generate an image of a full glass of wine. Does anyone have an explanation of how this works?”
