Today's briefing

What matters today

Today’s issue tracks the infrastructure around AI: who routes usage, who receives high-intent traffic, and where screening and systems work break down. Stripe’s reported OpenRouter acquisition is the central move, alongside fresh signals from travel, ads, drug screening, video, and inference.

Inside today's briefing
01Stripe’s reported OpenRouter acquisition brings model routing alongside an existing payments and token-billing connection.
02AI-referred travel traffic converted just 1% below non-AI traffic in July, down from a 47% gap a year earlier.
03Meta removed 32 ads for Kromix after WIRED asked, exposing a cover-image tactic that concealed pornographic material.
04LMCache’s chunked reservations completed 120 requests at concurrency 32, while the prior path deadlocked after 28.

Lead story / acquisition

Stripe’s OpenRouter Deal Puts AI Routing Beside the Billing Stack

Stripe is acquiring OpenRouter, the AI model-routing platform that offers a single endpoint across more than 400 models from more than 80 providers. Neither company has disclosed terms, though published estimates range from $7.5 billion to more than $8 billion, and the deal is expected to close within weeks.

OpenRouter scores requests by complexity, price, and speed, then routes them to the model it determines is the best fit. The company says more than 10 million developers and companies use the platform, which handles more than 10 trillion tokens daily; developers can switch providers without changing code.

The acquisition extends an existing commercial connection. Stripe has supplied OpenRouter’s payments infrastructure since at least January, and the companies built a token-billing integration that automatically meters and prices model use. Stripe has also recently acquired usage-based billing company Metronome and completed its Bridge acquisition.

OpenRouter says it will remain independent and that routing calls will continue to be made based on what is best for the customer. The transaction turns those statements into a post-close operating commitment, while the undisclosed terms leave its formal structure unknown.

Meta’s systems ran 32 ads for Kromix, an AI image tool marketing unrestricted sexualized content involving real people. Most used benign cover images to conceal pornography; Meta removed the ads after WIRED asked about them, while Apple said prohibited features may have been added after its review.

OpenAI Tests Cross-Session Safety Checks Without Prompt Access

OpenAI’s proposed Private Safety Processing would let approved zero-data-retention customers participate in cross-session abuse monitoring without routinely exposing prompts or outputs to OpenAI. Protected workloads would produce a limited alert signal, while customers retain underlying records—or keep content encrypted with customer-held keys. The rollout is targeted for September 2026 alongside a technical white paper, so the privacy and false-positive claims remain unproven. The system also has hard boundaries:7
