Today's briefing

What matters today

Today’s AI workbench comes with constraints: power, production, permissions and consent. xAI is using converted jet engines, OpenAI’s hardware sprint still needed human revisions, and stolen credentials are leaving companies with steep AI bills.

xAI installs eight converted jet engines to power Mississippi data center amid emissions challenge

Lead story / infrastructure

xAI powers a Mississippi data center with eight converted jet engines

Eight converted jet-engine turbines are supplying electricity to an xAI data center in Mississippi, according to Tom’s Hardware. The installation has state permits, but the Southern Environmental Law Center is challenging Mississippi’s approval over emissions assurances and projected pollution.

The equipment comes from Missouri-based ProEnergy, which repurposes unused General Electric aircraft turbines as generators. The company turned to data centers as electricity demand outpaced what traditional utilities could supply. Each turbine is rated for up to 50 megawatts; that is generating capacity, not confirmed output at the Mississippi site.

The environmental group alleges that xAI has not guaranteed compliance with standards for specific pollutants, including formaldehyde, and has undercounted projected emissions. Concerns also include carbon monoxide and volatile organic compounds. Tom’s Hardware reported the challenge, citing The New York Times; the allegations have not established that the equipment violates emissions limits.

The distinction from xAI’s earlier generator dispute is important: that lawsuit alleged the use of gas generators without required permits. This case concerns approval already granted for eight converted turbines. The installation provides a power source outside traditional utility capacity, while the dispute centers on whether the emissions assurances and estimates behind that approval are adequate.

OpenAI says two employees used AI to design a voice device in under a week

OpenAI says two employees used GPT-6 Astra to design a device for speaking to Codex in under a week, covering the enclosure, circuit board and software. A manufacturer made a small prototype batch in under a month after human reviews addressed tolerances and assembly details Astra missed. OpenAI also reported a higher BenchCAD 2.0 score for a newer internal model, but that benchmark does not test manufacturability or physical performance.

Fanfiction site shuts down after selling AI audio without authors’ consent

ao3.life shut down November 2 after its creator said it received more than 2,000 takedown requests in one day. The AO3 clone copied stories without permission and sold AI-narrated audiobooks, promising authors 91% of profits without securing their consent. Its removal process asked writers to verify ownership through AO3 profiles—even though AO3 was offline. AO3’s owner said the outage had caused no data loss.

Google traces nearly $1 million in AI charges to stolen credentials

Google and Mandiant describe attackers pooling stolen cloud and model credentials, then reselling access to paying customers. In one case, more than 500,000 model calls in under eight hours left a victim with nearly $1 million in token costs. Attackers also tested keys with single-token requests and enabled AI services without permission. Google recommends investigating those signals and setting model-spending limits.
